Do you have to get a couple the gifts that are on their registry, or can you get them something else?
I don't know much about weddings. My own wedding was a courthouse wedding and we never received gifts. I'm going to a wedding on Dec. 20 and I checked their registry online. The gifts on there are either astronomically expensive or just too cliche' (i.e. pot holders, tea towels, etc.). Can I get them something else or is that a faux pas?
I would stick with the registry. If it's not something they asked for, then it's probably because they don't need or want it. I wouldn't want to get someone something they didn't need/want for something as big as their wedding. If you don't think anything from the registry is in your price range, then I would get them a gift certificate from the place where they are registered. Then they could use it toward whatever they wanted, instead of having an item they don't want in the house!
